Default All things Badminton 2013 competition thread

By following the H&H coverage this morning, one learned that Badminton decides which horse is ridden first by those with more than one, unlike the other 4*s who allow the rider to select. But isn't it interesting that the rider's A Team horse is still the one being ridden at the end of the second day?

The dressage scores today were all over the board, but no one broke 40. In fact, the best first day score was Happy Times with a 43.? It'll be interesting when the German Big Guns go against the British and New Zealand Big Guns tomorrow.

    Thank you, H&H.

Apollo Kurt Wendy VanderHoeven (sp) is the only horse to date that has broken 40PP. I remember this horse from the Lexington WEG and how many positive comments there were on him, though (IIRC) he didn't finish the XC there.

Apollo is actually a decent XC horse in terms of the jumps, he (or possibly his rider) are just not fast. He jumped clean at WEG, just had too many time penalties to stay at the top.

The horse is not that fast. Stefano has no fear of speed!

Then I guess he'll just have to let me have him, LOL. I'd be willing to take the big slow poke off his hands!

I fell in love with this horse at WEG! He's so purty!

Michael Jung has taken first; WFP's second horse got him to 5th. I'm hoping for either WFP or Andrew Nicholson to win the grand slam. I just want to see someone win it.

The German judge just LOVED Michael Jung and Sam. He gave them the highest single score in all of the dressage, by a full percent. It was his score that put them in the lead. Coincidentally, he also gave Auffarth and Klimke their highest scores. Or was it a coincidence?

If history is any indication Sam will win. But what I'm not sure about is whether any of the 4* courses that he's run have had anything like the Badminton Quarry drop. That's a serious launch out into space. Anyone know if there is something similar at either Pau or Luhmuhlen? I know we don't have anything quite like it at Rolex.

The Quarry looks a little softer this year, probably because it comes at the beginning of the course. Would not want to be on a horse who over jumps the log in, though.

    Default the halo Effect

i am at Badminton and was amazed at some of the scoring. The main problems for horses and riders was the halt/reinback and flying changes. The weather was a bit of an influence too as it was very windy, cold, and raining this morning. Poor Colleen had to ride not only in the bad weather but following Apollo and Stefano.

This is the first time I've seen Shiraz in person and I thought he was quite good in the first half of the test but he didn't like the halt/reinback and he needs some work on the flying changes. However, he was scored much lower IMHO for those movements than were more well known riders in the afternoon who had similar errors. One even had the horse not really halt and threw his head up at each step back.

We listened to Badminton radio on the way back to B & B and the commenters were even commenting about some of the scoring. I hope it all sorts out fairly on XC.

BTW Tiana's test was lovely and the judges seem to prefer horses with what I consider a lot of knee action. Again JMHO.

Slightly off topic but I just noticed that Tiana's horse's dam has the same sire as my Irish guy: Carrabawn View. My fellow has a lot of knee action also. Maybe I need to get off my duff and start getting ready for something bigger than training level. :-) Seriously though, the commentators really loved her horse.

Thomas, William is .2 points of Andrew who's in 6th and on their other horses, they are 14th (AN) and =16th (WFP). Michael J is only 4.2 points less than WFP so it's anyone's game to win. Tomorrow will be really exciting. Going to bed now as we have a 1.5 hr drive to get there in the am.
