    I do not like the Litter Maid. The fine sand litter I have to use stinks something awful after one use.

    I have a better, cheaper idea. Use a regular litter box with clumping litter. When you change the litter, dump it out, scrape the bottom and then pour in a 1/2 to 1 cup of white vinegar. Swish it around, pour the vinegar into the bag with the used litter and wipe down the litter box with some paper towels. The stink will be gone.

    One of the reasons I hate the self-cleaning litter boxes is that they are so cumbersome to clean.

    I think the stink the OP is hoping to diminish is from the immediate use when it can't be scooped instantly.

    Yes... if I scoop it right away and put it in a bag it's good... but otherwise the odor lingers and spreads to fill the space... nothing like having half of your house smell like "tom cat" urine.
