    Default Slaughter billboards on I-25

These two messages have been rotating on an LED billboard next to a busy stretch of I-25 between Denver and Colorado Springs. Each ad displays for about 7 seconds, along with ads for banks, retailers, Comfort Dental, etc. They certainly do grab your attention.

    Americans Don't Eat Horses
    http://s73.photobucket.com/user/hfou...54956.jpg.html

Not sure what I think about them, but I do wonder how many of these there are around the country. I also wonder what sort of feedback FRER is getting from them. Maybe I will email the president and ask...

Personally, I think it's great! The horse meat scandal that is going on overseas shouldn't be happening. However, while it might be commonplace to eat a horse over there, this is America. We don't do that kind of thing here.

I'm a fan! Horses are not livestock to me. And I don't eat cats or dogs either.

With the Kentucky Derby just around the corner, some private citizens gave out over 350 flyers here in Louisville yesterday:

I personally believe the focus should be more on restricting the breeding of unwanted animals - to prevent the problem from occurring rather that stop one of the reasons it occurs.

Not only do I LOVE this, I think I need to donate to FRER so they can keep this up!

How do you restrict breeding and what problem would that prevent?

I think these billboards are brilliant!
Yes a donation is a great idea!

There is another group on the east coast doing the same.

They tried for a billboard near Churchill Downs a couple of years ago during Derby week, but the company owning the billboards close to the track didn't feel comfortable doing so.

They did get a billboard up on a smaller roadway close to the track for a couple of weeks.

I'm surely the outcast here, but kinda wish that money went to helping the horses, or properly educating the people locally who are still selling their horses at a sale thinking that the horse won't go to slaughter.

I don't know. I want the public to make an informed decision and not just "ohhh horses are pretttyyyy."

Most of the people I talk to at work have no idea that horses live 30 years or how much they cost to keep.

Some of the people trying to ban slaughter are like the people trying to ban carriage driving taking pictures of horses vomiting.

Maybe by raising awareness of the problem [particularly with race tracks and those who live near them or frequent them] it will increase donations to those groups who help?
Lots of roads to Rome, is what I'm thinking....

IMO those billboards ARE educating those individuals.

There are no decent tracks in Colorado, only one very small one.
However, this does seem like a great way to raise more money.
Proper education, a half-sentence is not sufficient, IMHO.

    Carry on

I don't think those billboards in CO are aimed at tracks.

Are they anywhere near Charlie Carter's place?

I hope so. If he still has a place in Longmont, it's quite possible they could be.

The place that a very few "in the trenches" know about? No.
They are in a prime spot to seize the attention and credit cards of animal lovers who aren't educated on the issue and could be lead to believe that FRER's work "protecting the American horses from slaughter" actually meant their money went to helping horses... Not spending six digits on fundraising. That one line billboard could easily make drivers think that the political efforts of FRER wouldn't mean the horses stay in the slaughter pipeline longer, suffer more, and more are shipped to Mexico.... Which is really what's happening.
