Trained at Fort Riley in Kansas. Nice photos and video at the link. He's the retired President of Dehner.

We first met Van in 2007 at the NCC at Ft. Riley, KS. He is a fine gentleman and a example of what happens when you do stuff right.

You can get personalized copies of his book through Dehner in Omaha.

If you have a chance to meet him have him tell you about the time he returned to garrison at Ft. Riley wearing his boots, skivvie shorts, web belt, and helmet. It's a hoot!!!

Thanks for sharing that, Anne. My dad was in the cavalry at Ft. Riley at the same time. Years later, when we would drive through the fort, he would point out the buildings that had been the stables, riding halls etc. I also remember him telling about riding cross-country rides up and down the rugged Kansas hills--not at a leisurely walk--ponying 2 horses!

    What a great story! I hope when I'm 89 I'm still riding!

I wish there were more video of him riding. That looked like a pretty well-executed turn on the haunches to me. Beautiful seat, lovely soft hands, I was SO LUCKY to get my early training with one of these old gents!!

What a true hero. I'm going to print that and hang it on my wall.
