    Default Jockey Club Name Released?

The Jockey Club recently released the name of a 2002 gelding I used to have. Does this mean that he's dead or do they routinely release the names of non-racing geldings past a certain age? I checked the registry and it didn't say that a death report was received.

Yes, they release the names of geldings over 10 years old if they haven't raced in a while (not sure the exact time frame) unless the horse was famous and the name retired.

As CHT said, they do release non retired names after a period of time.
I just checked, and my 2002 gelding's name has also been released. He is very much alive (or at least was when I last saw him an hour ago )

What's the release time span for mares? I recently found out that there's a 4 year old colt out there with my 1983 model mare's name. Gotta say, he's a much better racehorse than my girl would ever have been.

Lucky's a 2002, but since his last race was in late 2009, his name is still taken. If I read the rule correctly, it'll be free for use in 2014 as he hasn't raced since and obviously he won't be breeding anything!

ROFL...too bad it's six letters too long for the JC! I wonder if Peppermint Habit is taken....
