Default feeding both a pro and pre biotic?

i bought a pelleted grain called matrix fiber plus which has prebiotics already in it,which i know he can benefit from..but my question is

would it be harmful to have a prebiotic and a probitic together in feed?.

i would like to add ration plus to this grain.if this helps any.
as from other posts ive done .my gelding has some what i think are digestive/hindgut probs and has had antibio's in the past.which probably didn't help his gut much.hence me wanting to get his good bacteria in his digestive gut upto par again.

Probiotics are compounds which support and give nutrition to gut organisms.

Prebiotics are the actual organisms themselves.

There is no problem giving them both together, and they may even work synergistically.

I have used RationPlus in the past with excellent results. It's great stuff.

    Actually, its the reverse:

Prebiotics are the "food" for probiotics, which are the actual organisms.

I agree that they work synergistically, and think you would get more out of feeding both at the same time.

No, there is no problem with having them together. PREbiotics are usually Fructooligosaccharides (may be listed as FOS) or Mannan Oligosaccharides (MOS), sometimes Inulin- they are otherwise indigestible, but are supposed to stimulate the growth of "good" bacteria. PRObiotics are actual live microorganisms which are introduced to help colonize the gut with these "good" bacteria and help outcompete the "bad" bacteria. Some also produce digestive enzymes that help break down food better.

Summary- there is no problem with using them together. PREbiotics are additives, PRObiotics are live organisms.
