    Default Best Equitation Riders

Here's a question for you all: In your opinion, who is the best equitation rider (past or present) and where are they now?

    Please add video!

Probably the most accomplished Junior eq rider is Brianne Goutal. She won all four equitation finals, and if I'm not mistaken she's the only rider to have ever done that. You can find her competing internationally in the Grand Prix ring these days.

Bill Steinkraus (41 finals winner)....even had perfect equitation over jumper fences (especially on Riveria Wonder (rome 60) http://www.horsemagazine.com/thm/201...am-steinkraus/

Katie Prudent (nee Monahan) was one of the few equitation riders ever to have had a totally undefeated season. Interestingly there were two eq. riders who did it that year. The other was a saddle seat rider named Peter O'Donnell, subsequently a USEF judge (now retired).

Some riders who currently do the eq, or just aged out recently:

Lillie Keenan shown here scoring a 95: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY7QIchtM8Y

Tori Colvin, same class as above but the previous year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjsmPi1Wv-g

Jacob Pope, winning USET Finals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOzMA0zdUyQ

Catherine Tyree, 3rd at Maclay Finals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiMhI_lZtaw

Elizabeth Benson, winning WIHS Finals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-RzWZIn1fc

    Charlotte Jacobs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljwMtYHuVxM

IMO those are the top ones currently. Lillie, Tori, Catherine, and Charlotte all have lots of success in the high jr/ao jumper classes as well.

Maya, you and I are of the same generation, so I'll say Francesca Mazella. Such a lovely rider, and if what happened to her doesn't make everyone strap on an approved helmet for every ride, nothing will.

Are you saying she won every single equitation class she entered in one year??

Remarkable, if so. I had not heard that. You would think a horse would trip in at least one class or something.

If we're not talking about riders currently showing in the equitation...McLain Ward. Youngest rider to win the USET and he makes a 1.5M GP look like a medal round.

I also second Brianne Goutal. I grew up watching "Horsepower" and she always looked so soft and effective (still does!)

I am going to say Buddy Brown, because he did the eq, the junior hnters AND the grand prix all on the same horse - sandsablaze. That takes talent! More talent, in my eyes, than having a different horse for each division.

McLain Ward is always my favorite to watch, beautiful position that just looks so soft and natural. I wish my leg would be as good at the 3'6 as his is at GP...sigh.

    McLain Ward.

It is true, he goes around those GP courses looking fantastic... Pretty sure we all wish we had his eq

Yes, she did. I can't remember which year but it was *around* 1974-76, something like that. COTH wrote about it. I saw her ride several times that year and she really was un-frickin'-beatable. (Especially by me, LOL!)

I didn't know that either and it is remarkable. Thank you for sharing that.
