Wow, she's in such horrible shape, I can't imagine her being able to stand, much less nurse two foals. I don't think you're nuts at all. I think someone needs to step in and educate that owner before she loses all three of them.
I'm just livid about this. As a caring horse owner, dumbfsck rednecks like this make the whole rest of the state look like we don't know our @$$ from a hole in the ground.
Please write to Commissioner Gary Black at the Georgia Department of Agriculture and ask him to get these animals seized. He's a jerk but he's also a large animal vet and he definitely DOES know what a 1 on the Henneke scale looks like!! So let's remind him: email@example.com

Just found this update on Save the Horses FB page.
Thank you kind person that checked up on the mare and foals.
BREAKING NEWS REF MAMA HORSE OF THE TWIN FOALS! Just on the outside chance, I called the Animal Control. A very sweet lady answered the phone and knew why I was calling. Here's the story: Mama is a 20y/o mare. A stud in a neighboring farm got to her. It was not an intentional mating. She is currently receiving additional feed and supplements. An equine specialist will be checking on her tomorrow!
Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this was appalling. I gasped when I saw the picture.
The mare being 20 and having an accidental breeding is not an excuse to have an emaciated horse. It might have been in 1950- but not now. I have a 34 year old POA type large pony mare and she is fed her complete nutritional requirements with a complete feed and hay stretcher, soaked. She also gets hay, but mostly likes to fling it around. Health standards for horses, and most animals, have come a long way since it was okay for an old horse to be thin- NOT okay anymore, at least not in my book.
And that doesn't even get me started on- gee, next door stallion got loose? Might have bred mare? Let's get her some drugs to make sure she DOESN'T get pregnant as an elderly old mare???
Oh mylanta, I thought I'd open the link and se a mare that was a little ribby and just shake my head and tell you you we're looney... but holy cow I just can't believe that she's actually still alive, I also can't believe both of the foals are still alive, and I cant believe someone put that on the news thinking it was all ok looking Kicking puppies might have been better to broadcast Can I room with you guys in the loony bin now?
I was hoping this was a Rescue and newly acquired mare ...
but no there is absolutely no excuse for that mare to be that skinny. Lack of SUFFICIENT food and probably lack of other basic requirements. And the woman had scrubs like she is in the health care business!!
Animal control needs to be watching closely. Here there was a mare that thin with foal seized with 13 others that didn't even look that bad. Went to court and owner lost the horses and faced animal cruelty charges.
I'm writing my email!!!
Isn't Matt Lauer on the Today show? ...he ( or his wife) is a horseperson.
