First time poster here...long-time lurker/reader. I'm thinking of breeding to a nice Contender offspring here in the US with proven GP experience, time in Germany, registered in Germany etc...but the stud fee is a lot more than others I've looked at. Should I be concerned? He's about $500 more other stallions that I've looked at with similar backgrounds. The owner is telling me he's coming down in price for me---but it's still seems high. Would welcome any thoughts as this is my 1st time to breed. Thanks!
The general range for most nice WB studfees here is 1,500 to 2K for fresh cooled....so you can see if you are in that ballpark. Frozen is a whole 'nuther thing depending on with our without LFG, how many straws, if you can split doses, etc etc. And if it is frozen make sure you know something about the semen quality as some stallions freeze better than others.
He is a proven GP horse, if he is the right match for your mare $500 is a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things. I do know what you are saying though, some stud fees don't seem to make sense when you compare them to others of similar stats but it is what it is. The right match is most important, especially if he is willing to come down in price.
Stud fees are probably the last thing to take into account when breeding a mare especially when you are only talking about a $500 difference. That is so insignificant in the grand scheme of breeding that it doesn't even begin to be a factor. Suitability needs to be first and foremost then look into fertility and availability as well as the SO's reputation.
