    Default Greece: Wha' happened?

I don't mean to diss Greece, but it what happened between, yanno, Athens and the advent of so much of Western Culture and Philosophy in particular... to a country with a reputation for lots of graft and such in its government?

Forgive me for being a clueless American who doesn't know quite enough world history.

One might suppose that it was the centuries of being Ottoman that made them more like Middle Easterners than Westerners.

"According to an editorial published by the Greek conservative newspaper Kathimerini, large public deficits were indeed one of the features that have marked the Greek social model since the restoration of democracy in 1974. After the removal of the right-wing military junta, the government wanted to bring disenfranchised left-leaning portions of the population into the economic mainstream. In order to do so, successive Greek governments have, among other things, customarily run large deficits to finance public sector jobs, pensions, and other social benefits."

kind of looks like the same road way the United States has taken

Looks like some of the drivers that drove the United States down that road way were also doing some back seat drivin' in Greece:

Round up the usual suspects! Oh wait... we don't do that.

Consider it a preview of coming attractions for the USA.

Listening to the Greece Dissing that did happen in the press a while back, I thought it made their country sound more like the Northern Mexico/Baja Peninsula I knew as a kid. If you were pulled over for a speeding ticket you gave the cop cash asking him if he could just "take care of it" for you.

Really? They are Aristotle and Nichomachean Ethics..... and then some stuff... and now. Don't get it, even though a couple of millennia have passed.
