Default Popular book/movies you can't stand?

What are some popular and "critically acclaimed" books/movies that you couldn't stand?

The biggest one for me was Catcher in the Rye. Holy crap Holden just SHUT UP and GET OVER IT! Life sucks, we know! But you gotta make the best of it! Wallowing in your sorrows won't make it go by any easier. I got a lot of crap back in high school from classmates because I didn't like it. Maybe it was was because I was one of those weird teens that actually liked my life who didn't hate her parents and have the whole "no body understands me!" phase. So I really couldn't relate to the main character.

Then there was The Old Man and the Sea....

Hunger games is not only poorly written but fairly liberally ripped off of battle royale. I don't get the appeal. I also really don't like The Lord of the rings books or movies, not my thing at all.

I ALSO can't stand Catcher in the Rye and almost feel like I can't admit that in public

    Despise Titanic.

I love Catcher in the Rye, but I have to admit that on my first two reads I did not like the book. Holden is a bit of an ass. Somewhere along the way though, I began to grow fond of him.

Agree on Titanic. I felt like shouting "jump!" during that pivotal scene.

I can't believe there is someone out there that agrees with me about Titanic!!!! Finally!!!!

Also... Twilight. The stupidest, worst acting I've ever seen.

I've always despised Titanic. Horrible. I've never seen or read Twilight, but I've had enough conversations with kids turning it in for reading to hate it.

    I love Forrest Gump.

Same here! I was an English major in college so people assume I love all "classic" literature.

I really just wanted Holden to STFU after the first few pages.

I thought the book, Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, was bad. Seems like people were hyped over the title. Good gawd yes, Titanic, jump and get it over with!

Also hated Titanic, but I am also not a fan of Leo. Hunger Games, Twilight, 50 shades. If something is going to be a best seller, it should at least be well written.

Hated Secretariat and Seabiscuit as well for a whole host of reasons.

Twilight. I mercifully haven't heard much about it except from my DD, who hates all of it. Book, movie, she's equal opportunity.

Classic wise - well Steinbeck, "Red Pony" anyone? Fitzgerald, yes Catcher in the Rye and the newer "angsty" books, Lord of the Flies . . . maybe good for kids to learn about man's inhumaity to man but by gol I'd like something lighter and uplifting.

I know this book wasn't popular in the mainstream but I absolutely loathed "Riders." I wanted to slap that main character for being such an idiot. I started to like one of the other characters and then she told someone at a party that her initial necklace "F" meant she was F**kable. After that I tossed it aside and ended up giving it away to someone here on CoTH.

Meanwhile, on the "adult" literature side....

...the George RR Martin series. (Fully realizing I am in a small minority here.) Go ahead, bring the ghouls and chop off each others' heads, no worries. The inexcusable preteen "flowering" focus -- the inexorable budding breasts and menstruation and rape and torture of what in real life would be barely teenage girls.....icks me out in the largest way. How is it that we're all uber-happy to read pervy, average writing?
