    Default Alllergic reaction to Pentosan

I had a pony have an allergic reaction to pentosan today. The vet said he had never heard of another case. Anybody have experience with this?

Well, if your vet actually read the package insert there is specific warning of potential allergic reactions. In particular this occurs if the patient is allergic to heparin or other forms of polysulfated glycosaminoglycans. Allergies have been pretty well reported in human research literature.

What kind of reaction? It's rare according to my vet, but happens. my horse swells up and bleeds at the site for instance.

So what other drugs would it be good to avoid in this case? The pony was also not a happy camper after his spring shots.

About 15 minutes after the injection he got itchy all over and then broke out into hives. He never had any swelling at the injection site. The vet prescribed dex but he appeared to be mostly recovered by the time we got it into him.
