Metal is cheaper in kentucky - so I imagine it's the same for Tennessee. We went with metal for our house there.

In Florida I got a metal roof quote - 21K. So we did it ourselves for around 9K (which included renting the cherry picker so we could get the metal all the way to the top of the house (2 stories).

Both places look great - and we won't have to think of re-roofing after we retire.

On a related note, my barn will be in need of a new roof soon and I'm debating going metal there, too. Anyone have any experience with that?
Including the noise? When it rains, I at least have my attic floor to "insulate" me from the noise.
We have metal roof on house and barn. Nosy when you get hail or have a hurricane, but horses get used to it - just give them hay. Some insulation between the roof and stalls will also help dull the sound.
    Sandy in Fla.

I must not be charging enough. That would be enough for me to put a standing seam copper roof on two houses that size.

You must mean 7 thousand, not 70. If so, they needed to get another bid.

I wonder if they have a very complicated, steep roof line, with dormers and such, so they had to really do much more work than on a plain one, as mine is.

My barn has a metal roof, and no insulation - it's definitely not quiet in a rainstorm, but I kind of like the sound of raindrops on the roof. Horses, as someone else has noted, haven't seemed to care yet - I think they're happy to have a place to get out of the weather more than anything. Toss hay into the equation, and I've got a very happy pony.

I will say that it is a little deceptive - if I'm in the barn and it starts to rain, I always think that it's raining harder than it really is!
