I agree with Squish (and have learned a lot from Squish's posts, thank you!). You cnigh, have done the best you could by your good dog. You have been brave and caring, thoughtful, patient and decisive when necessary. I'm impressed with you.

I note that Houndhill, and all her ranting about the evils of spaying, has disappeared. Interesting, that.

Peace to you, cnigh. You did the best you could do with what you had.

Thinking of you... Godspeed Shade. I know from experience that they never leave us. They are always there looking from above.

    FROM FRIEND TO FRIEND

You're giving me a special gift,
    So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
    Your courage makes me proud.

    But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
    And understanding earthly acts
    Will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes,
    Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
    Once more make me whole.

    The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
    For it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
    My partner 'til the end.

Please, understand just what this gift,
    You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
    And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
    For I believe it too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
    The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
    My pain and struggle done.

    And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
    Forever here, within your heart,
    And memory I'll stay.

I'll be there watching over you,
    Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
    ...a young dog once again.

I have followed this post from the beginning and was very saddened to read she didn't make it. Know that you did everything you could for her. My heart goes out to you.

I have had two experiences with pyometra. One was my then 11 year old doberman. She came through surgery just fine and is 12 1/2 today. I didn't think it was something that would repeat so decided not to have her daughter spayed. Bad mistake. She recently developed pyometra. She made it through the surgery but passed that night. Tomorrow will be two weeks since she died.

I will not allow another dog to reach her senior years unspayed.

Default RIP - My Beautiful Girl

Shade was a wonderful girl to the end. She went very quickly and peacefully. We were all with her, her boys, my husband and myself.

    We will always miss her.

So very sorry, cnigh. What a rollercoaster you've been on. Lots of us know just how that feels, which is why we're crying with you.

Cnigh, I am so very sorry for you and your family about your loss of Shade! It is always a hard thing, but you did your very best for Shade, and she was fortunate to have shared her life with you.

Camstock, I've actually been following this thread closely, just didn't feel I had anything further to add. I didn't mean to rant, I was trying to be supportive of the OP, and perhaps provide some food for thought with research findings on the some of the relative risks as well as benefits of elective ovariohysterectomies vs intact bitches. I hope some did find this information interesting and potentially helpful. We each have to weigh these relative risks vs benefits for our own bitches.

Again, cnigh, I am so sorry about Shade! Sleep softly, Shade.

I'm so very, very sorry to hear Shade couldn't pull through. You and your husband are amazing and have huge hearts. Every dog should be as loved as Shade.

Hugs to you and your DH...

    Fragile Circle

‎"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. ♥
Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only certain immortality,
never fully understanding the necessary plan."

    Irving Townsend.
