Default Weekends! From a cat perspective.

Does the weekend (or holidays or vacation) have any meaning to your cat?

If not, how do you know those special days actually exist?

Or does your cat observe some sort of sabbath?

My kitty loves the weekends because it means that he gets to spend more time sleeping atop my horizontal body in front of the tv!

Oh yes, my cats know the meaning of weekends.

First, it is possible to sleep in longer without being disturbed by the darn people who "have to get up and go to work," and who set that nasty alarm.

Secondly, on weekends, generally there are Two FT Cat Serfs to provide snacks, petting, and entertainment, instead of one or none, depending on travel and commuting schedules.

Finally, on weekends there is a really good chance that the Serfs, er, people will go to Petsmart or similar store, and return with tasty snacks and the preferred flavors of various food.

Cats don't celebrate the sabbath... that would imply that they believe in God. Cats believe they are God.

Or every day is a holiday for a cat/God.

But there might be some cats that think of Monday as a day off. Picture the household that has all kinds of people and hockey games and loud dance parties on the weekend. Tell me that cat isn't waiting for his next day off.

No, no. Cats don't merely believe, but know they are gods. They were worshipped as such by the Egyptians, and they have never, ever, ever forgotten.

I think my cats enjoy it when I'm home all day. They do their normal sleep/eat thing but will buzz by at various times and talk at me or sleep on my lap.

And sadly, I think they LOVE it when I stay home sick and spend the day in bed. They all get on the bed and sleep with me for as long as I stay there. I don't know if they know I don't feel good and are trying to comfort me or if they just like it when I run a fever. I have more cats sleeping on me/the bed when I'm sick than I ever do on a regular night.

Dylan definitely knows when my room-mate is going to watch a hockey game. As soon as the chips and salsa come out, he sprawls on the carpet in front of the tv. Room-mate rubs the cat's belly and talks to him the entire game. It's a trip!

My cats ADORE weekends! They get Mommy, all day! This means the demand for attention reaches an all-time high, the demand for lap time is loudly communicated, and no, I can't sleep in - they are scratching at the door!

Cats view weekends from the same perspective as the Dowager Countess.

Do you think their motivation is

    1) Hey, someone cranked up the thermostat to 102 degrees!

    or

    2) Oh sh!t, the breadwinner might not win bread. We'd better make sure she stays alive.

Mondays are my day off. Ricky and Bobby are far more likely to take a day off, too (from whatever it is they do outside all day), and hang out with me. When I'm especially lazy, the bed gets crazy crowded with the two cats and the dog. Right now, though, Bobby's reading over my shoulder (which is unusual. Usually he hangs with Stella the dog on our day off), Ricky's hanging in his favorite spot, and Stella is doing what she prefers on a day off.....sleeping ALL. DAY. LONG.

I think at least two of my cats (the boys) love weekends because Mom is available for lovin almost all day and Oliver gets "lunchie." My two girls couldn't care less, they just sleep all day on the bed one way or the other. The jury's still out on whether Booker T. is going to like weekends.

My cat has mixed feelings about weekends. Sometimes the humans are available to provide more attention. Sometimes not. Sometimes the humans just lose their marbles, start moving household items around randomly, and push noisy equipment around the floors. Nothing ruins a nap like a human with the zoomies.

There's a reason they are named Ricky and Bobby.
