Default Good news for my boy...but need jingles for a sweet mare & her girl. Update

Today was supposed to be a routine vet visit for our barn, spring shots/Coggins plus a re-check of my gelding's stifle that he injured last fall and another boarder's mare who has PSSM and has been having a rough week due to a pasture injury.

My boy, who has been doing rehab under saddle, was cleared to go back into regular dressage work, working back slowly for fitness, of course. Our vet says there's no reason he can't do some maiden-level eventing later this year, and that he looks just fine for an 18-year-old.

Pretty mare was feeling lousy this morning, and was given painkillers and I think a muscle relaxant and after a little bit of turnout, was feeling better, eating grass and hay, and drinking a little though still not interested in grain. Vet drew blood to check enzyme levels as well.

Her owner, another boarder, and I went to lunch and while we were there, the vet called. Pretty mare was in kidney failure, and needed to be shipped to the VA Tech clinic ASAP to give her a chance. Our vet said he was floored, because she showed none of the symptoms he'd expect for something like that.

Pretty mare is owned and much loved by a great teenage girl. Kid is a caring and conscientious young rider, pretty mare is her first horse and is awfully important to her-she's had a rough go of things in the last couple of years for various reasons, and mare has been her anchor though those tough tween-to-teen years.

They're on their way to Tech now. If anyone can spare a few jingles for Whisper and her kid and her mom, it would mean a lot.

Right now, I don't care if my boy ever sets foot in the show ring again. I just want to hug him and be thankful for him. And when and if pretty mare's kid feels like riding again, I'm going to offer him to her for show season.

What the heck would do THAT??? Never heard of or seen some of these conditions, and I've been in the horse biz for over 35 years! I wonder if some of our modern feeds/lack of turnout are causing these things, or is it genetic?

Lunatic essay author aside, horses really can make a huge difference in how our kids grow into adulthood. Mega jingles for everyone involved.
