Hi all!! Coming to the wise people of the breeding forum to get some recommendations on hunter stallions for a very good friends pony mare that will most likely be bred this season. I don't know much about hunters, so your input is greatly needed!!

The mare is a grey, welsh cross, just under 14 hands, has jumped up to 2'6'' in the children's hunter divisions quite successfully. The owner does not have her papers, she has gone back to the last few owners, but no clues yet!

The mare is a gentle, sweet girl. The owner is looking to get a large pony/small horse out of her, so I need to know from you guys how big a stallion they can pick without endangering the mare during birth? They would love to get a 15-15.2 hands horse as the result, but will be happy with whatever they get. The owner wants the baby to be her daughter's next hunter star (after training of course), and something she herself can plop around on. Would love a stallion that passes on an ammy friendly temperment, with a good jump of course. They want to stay away from grey, since the mare already is grey, so they at least want a chance at something different. Also, mare has a shortish neck, so that is really the only thing that needs improving.

Oh, and they want fresh, not frozen!!

Please help with names, links, videos, whatever you guys can send my way that I can pass on to the owner would be great! They want to get the ball rolling within the next month or so

Because there is no history on the mare, anything you breed to is going to be a gamble. They don't want a grey, but because there is no history on the mare, you don't know if she is homozygous grey or not. They want a foal within a specific height range, but without knowing the lineage on the mare, that is going to be a gamble as well. It will be much cheaper in the end for them to purchase a 2-3 year old with all of the traits they want. That way, they can get exactly what they want and have no risks of getting a potential foal they may not be happy with.

By the time you add up shipping semen costs, vet fees, insemination, looking after the mare during gestation and the yearly costs for a weanling, yearling, two-year old...etc., etc....much, much cheaper to just go buy exactly what they want.

Jupiter!!! Completely proven sire with a fancy resume of his own in the show ring.
He is 15.3 so your resulting foal should be just about where you want it. He has a facebook page. There is fresh available but most folks only know about the frozen. I just sold the loveliest Jupiter baby I've seen in quite some time.

I'm never a fan of breeding up (mare to stallion) but if she's 14 hands, this should work.

I am just the messenger Foal doesn't have to be specific height or color, but everyone has their wish list. Very easy going owner, I am just trying to help her out since she doesn't use COTH. She just said if she could create her perfect horse, would be any color but grey since she is nervous about melanomas, and a small hunter horse 15- 15.3. She would be happy with anything though. Just was sharing her dreams So I still would love recommendations for her!

I talked to Jupiter's owner last week and she told me she was only doing frozen. I will still be breeding to him as I think he would be a great cross for my intent and purpose.

I know Escapade has been crossed to pony mares and the results were quite nice. Every one of our foals has had a beautiful neck and the Ammy temperment is there. Miht be worth a look. He is also in FL. so maybe an afternoon trip to visit him. Alicia has always been great about that and Escapade loves visitors. If Escapade is to big for their liking, there is also his large pony son there too.
