Our pony will be a year from last breeding date tomorrow. Mine usually go much earlier than the standard "342" you read about.
She finally is developing a bag but not a lot to express out of it. I got enough to try to milk test it but I had to divide the formula by 3, so not sure how accurate it would be. Calcium was over 250 and PH was 7.2
So hopefully soon.
What is the longest your mares have ever held out. Do you notice a difference with maidens? How about the time of year they are due?

Longest: 361 as a maiden. Then next foal was 341.

Shortest: 322 as a maiden.

Lotty cooked her first foal for 373 days. I forget how long she carried her second, well fewer than that. I put her in before dinner one evening, thinking that I would put her foal monitor on after dinner but when I went out there was the foal, up and dried

Our "record" happened last year -- 379 days! For my daughter's maiden mare. She was beside herself by the time the foal finally arrived!

Interestingly, the mare due at the same time went 372 days, so both went over. The rest of the mares were about normal last year.

Both "overbaked" colts had very, very long manes -- like everything else had stopped, but the mane hair kept growing!!

No. they're just flat durations. The further away from the summer solstice, the longer the gestational duration tends to be.

And 445 days is the longest on record with a live foal - in Australia a few years ago.

Wow!! I am pretty sure I would have a heart attack it any of my mares went that long!! The longest my mare has ever gone (with 4 foals) was 333 days, the shortest was 321. All perfectly cooked (and between 11pm-12am I might add!)

The above mare's first filly had her first colt at 323 days...again perfectly cooked at about 11pm.

I am curious to see how my maiden mare (foal out of first mare, 1/2 sister to second) does in 2014!

around 365...twice. Once the mare appeared to be progressing slowly but normally. The other looked like she should have had the kid 2 weeks ago and the foal was about ready to FALL out....never saw a mare with a behind that lax. All she did is stand with her butt parked up against a stall wall like she was trying to hold it in. I joked she had her legs crossed for the last 2 weeks.One the whole...mares due quite early in the season go long and ones due late in the season go early. I figure it is Ma Natures way of trying to give momma ideal grazing/foaling conditions.Shortest gestations: 310 for a preemie looking red bag foal: small, shiny/fine coat, knees with flexion contractures. He was not quite baked. Next was 320...fully cooked looking colt o/o maiden mare with no bag/no signs of foaling. She ran into the barn, gobbled up her dinner around 6 pm. For some reason I went out to the barn at 10 pm and there was a foal up and nursing in the stall. The one due now is average....at 339 she waxed 3 days ago....so any time now. Most of my foals have run around the 340 to 345 average.

Mine typically foal between 330 days and 344 days. If I remember correctly, our personal farm average is 338 days. The later/hotter the year, the earlier they tend to go. I have only had a couple of mares go longer than 350 days, but I think that is because most of ours are due in May, June, and July when the weather is warmer.

I had a maiden foal at day 378. Her filly was born looking very underdeveloped and weak, but it now a healthy, normal-looking 4 year old.

I had another mare have a colt at day 307, just last year. Although he was small, he was otherwise completely normal and needed no assisstance with anything. This mare also had a colt in 2010 at day 312, who was very large and fully developed. She has had 2 fillies both born around day 340.

We had a 364 last year! Frozen so we knew to the minute conception. Experienced mare, biggest, most beautiful foal I've ever seen. Delivery issues but both made it.
