I used to have a dog whose two joys in life were chasing cars and accompanying me on trail rides. When her love for the first led to a broken hip, her ability to enjoy the second was severely compromised. She was so unhappy at being left behind, though, that I used to take her along anyway, and when she got too tired to keep up, I'd let her hitch a ride the rest of the way home. She used to lie over my horse's withers right in front of the saddle. My horse never minded, and it worked out great.
I heard a neigh. Oh, such a brisk and melodious neigh as that was! My very heart leaped with delight at the sound. --Nathaniel Hawthorne
