Ouch - from winning the BCC to parting ways at Gulfstream
Fort Larned - winner of the 2012 Breeders' Cup Classic - making his 2013 debut in the Gulfstream Park Handicap ($300k) was considered a shoe-in winner.
Then again when you leave the gate, stumble and toss your jockey (Brian Hernandez Jr.) - you don't to win the race even if you pass the field and cross the wire by 25+lengths It was one of those jaw dropping falls so quick.
From a tweet shortly thereafter: Fort Larned grabbed a quarter on his left front high on the foot in the middle of his heel according to Ian Wilkes, otherwise seems ok.

Wow. Saw him pass the field, too bad the video didn't show him after. Must have been interesting for the other riders Thankfully no one got hurt.
We don't get less brave; we get a bigger sense of self-preservation........

Quite a shocker- indeed one saw the jockey come off and it took the announcer a few seconds to catch up to who it was.
Who was that nice mare- Our Own? that won the turf race earlier in the day.

The horse thinks he won, can't figure out what all the fuss is about!

He knows his job! What a sport.
I hope he recovers easily from the grab.

Hope he is ok. He apparently landed on his head, so they are going to have to keep an eye on him for a few days until they are comfortable he is unscathed.

Video - TVG's upclose replay of the fall - head-on- view
An update 3-10-13: “The cuts he sustained when stumbling are not that bad, just superficial. We’ll know more in a couple of days.”
By all accounts Brian is doing well too although honestly I'm surprised by the news articles barely mentioning him getting tossed. Coming off any horse unplanned is not without significant physical risk

Fort Larned demonstrated he's very well schooled indeed! Don't need no stinkin' jockey, I know where the finish is!
Show that photo to the naysayers who go on about how these horses don't like to race.

It reminds me of that moment in the 1973 Belmont Stakes at the top of the stretch when Ron Turcotte turned to look back. According to Raymond Woolfe, Lucien Laurin had dreamed earlier that week that Turcotte would fall off.
Now we have a good idea of what it would have looked like.

A lot of analysis for what is exceedingly hypothetical discussion as the presence (weight, movement, cues, etc) of a jockey changes everything.
