I'm 5ft1.5 (yes that 1/2" does make a difference! LOL) my coming 4 yr old has just had a growth spurt and is now pushing 16-2. I am praying he doesn't grow much more as he's already bigger than his sire and seems to be taking after his dam. As of now I don't look overly small on him but it does feel strange after always owning 15-3 and smaller before.
Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!
I'm a leggy (long femur) 5'7". I comfortably hop on anything over 14.3 and try to not let my upper body throw them off balance. This horse is honestly over 18 hands. (I refuse to measure him as I strongly dislike being astride - really an "I won't ride them policy" - anything over 17.2) This horse is just shy of 16.1 - he is a smidge wider in the barrel than the first horse. This guy is about 17 hands. The first horse is his half brother and well over a hand taller. Therefore I say he's 16.2!
ETA: I'm hitting a file uploading wall - even in a new post - trying to add the smaller horse images. I'll retry in a bit. Sorry!
This mare is about 15.3 and bigger in the barrel than any of the above horses. She is "stout" and can take a much taller rider easily. Another 16.0 hand mare with a big barrel. This one is 16 hands with a very small barrel and petite front end. I feel like I over power her if I get the teeniest bit ahead of vertical...so it is more of a challenge to ride her - I have to practice patience!
I was almost 5'2 and rode anything from 12 hands to 17+ hands. The tallest I owned was an appendix at 16.3.
Because of back surgery I am now 5'0. My horse died a year ago and was 15 hands. I haven't ridden since he died and have decided to go critter shopping.
I am headed to look at a little 13.2 mule the end of the month. The mule I had been riding was 16.1. I had no problems getting on anything I ever rode from the ground. Till my surgery. Even after surgery when I absolutely need to I can still get on anything from the ground.
