Default RIP - Dr. James McLean of Benlea Welsh Ponies

The Welsh pony world just lost a renown breeder - Dr. James McLean ("Benlea" prefix) of Glen Allen, VA. He bred "Pony Dot Com" (Benlea Playboy) who was the 2002 AHSA Horse Of the Year Small Pony Hunter, as well as many top Welsh A & B show ponies throughout the decades. Benlea, in partnership with Farnley and Findelyn, helped select and import outstanding talented large Section B Welsh bloodstock from the UK for the development and promotion of the larger Section B show ponies here.

His daughter told me he died peacefully at home, looking out over his pastures and his ponies in the snow from his bedroom window.

His stallions will be going to Farnley Farm. The broodmare band has been mostly disbursed with only 3 remaining.

    Obituary here

Goodbye, Dr McLean. And thank you.

Oh I am so sorry to hear this. I have owned 2 of his wonderful mares, Benlea Pandora and Benlea Minuet. Minuet is 26 this year and still with us spending her time babysitting youngsters. Pandora was recently sold to another breeder, but I kept one of her daughters as well as one of Minuet's to carry on those wonderful genetics. Dr. McLean was a wonderful, knowledgeable man and I enjoyed sharing pony information with him on occasion. He was a true asset to the pony world and he will be greatly missed.

I am sickened to hear. What an amazing, insightful man. My wonderful mare Hidden Creeks Elfin (http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/hidden+creeks+elfin), dam of Otteridge Foxtrot, had the amazing Dolrhedyn Rambler as her sire). I have a yearling filly that is outstanding (!!!) by Crossgates Larasan (http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/crossgates+larasan). His vision lives.

I had many a lovely conversation with him. What a true gentleman. We lost a good one folks.

I am very sad to read this news. We have lost so many from our small Welsh world already this year.

Very Sad to hear this. I was lucky enough to have worked with a few lovely Benlea ponies, including Pony Dot Com's full brother.

Quicksilver - We also had one that was out of Minuet that was one of my favorites of all time. His name was Benlea Sea Wolf (Lemontree Sea CaptainXMinuet). Last I checked he was successfully carting kiddos around in the Childrens.

I am saddened to hear this. I only had one conversation with him, a couple of years ago, when I purchased a young stallion that he had bred. He was very informative and helpful.

    He will be missed.
