    Default Need new helmet for under $100

    I have been putting it off and putting it off as far as getting a new helmet. Yesterday I pulled the lining out of my current helmet and found some cracks in the structure. Riding a rather hot/sensitive horse makes me not want to put this off any longer.

    I need something under or around $100 that will look good at shows but also will be comfortable and ventilate well for schooling. I currently have an IRH ATH, but it is kind of bulky.

    I was looking at the Troxel Liberty, Ovation Zephyr, or Troxel Intrepid, as well as potentially just getting another IRH. Anybody have any experience with the Ovation or Troxel helmets?

    I am a recent convert from Tipperary to Ovation. I have the Deluxe Schooler. It is lightweight and comfortable, and the liner can be removed and washed. It is low profile and doesn't look mushroomy in pictures . My head is oval, not sure how good it would be a for a round head shape. Also, I don't know if all Ovations are created equal as far as shape, weight and underlying features.

    I have the Ovation deluxe schooler and love it. It fits me so much better than the Troxel I had to replace.

    I really like my Ovation with the dial in the back and the washable liner.

    I like my Ovation schooling helmet as well. I think the Ovation model you selected would be fine. The IRH helmets that would be an improvement on the one you have are going to be way over your budget.

    Troxel helmets have always served me well, but enough people have recommended Ovation that I will definitely check them out when I replace my helmet next time.

    Have the same knock-off, and have been very pleased with it as well.
    Well isn't this dandy?

    (honest, I don't work for them, I just want them to stay in business for the next time I need a helmet!)

    I also have the Ovation schooler helmet, and LOVE it! I bought it to be just a schooling helmet, but I've ended up wearing it every time I ride.

    Troxel= round head
    Ovation= long oval head

    I can't wear a Troxel.

    My ovation protege is quite comfy; have no idea how it looks for showing tho.

    I have a lami-cell that I love. It is much lighter & cooler than the IRH it replaced.

    Does anybody have the Tipperary Sportage? I have it in my shopping cart but am having second thoughts as no one has recommended it.

    Thanks!

    Giant ditto. In over 25 years of helmet use, the Lami-Cell is the most comfortable I've ever put on my cranium.

    I was a Sportage wearer for years. Comfy and lightweight but I wasn't crazy about how they look on me. The Ovation is just a comfy, and the Deluxe Schooler comes in a light color, which I really appreciate in the summer! The washable liner is a big plus (for me) compared to the Tipp.

    I have it and LOVE it. I'm not sure I'd wear it for shows - I have a JR8 for that - but it's wonderful otherwise.

    I do not buy a helmet based on brand, I have to go to the store and try them on as even within a brand the fit can vary widely. In addition some of the dial adjustments hit in a spot that is VERY uncomfortable for me and will give me a headache in <1 min. They are also changing them all the time so the helmet that worked 2 or 3 years ago can no longer be found and I have to figure out which new model will be comfortable.

    So my suggestion is, if possible, go someplace with a large selection and keep trying until you find one that works FOR YOU.
