    Horse & Hound
    2 March, 2013
French international event rider Bruno Bouvier was killed in a fall on the cross-country phase of Barroca D'Alva horse trials in Portugal earlier today.

Tributes to the 60-year-old have been flooding in from his fellow event riders on twitter.

Gemma Tattersall: "Totally gutted and sad to hear about Bruno Bouvier RIP you were such a great man. #terrible"

Ruth Edge: "R.I.P Bruno Bouvier such a sad loss of a great man."

Andrew Heffernan: "Such sad news about Bruno Bouvier. A great guy who was a real character and will be sadly missed."

Bruno had competed at the highest level, including regularly travelling to the UK for Badminton, Blenheim and Burghley, during his career.

Further information will be posted when it becomes available.

The Horse and Hound story has been updated with this: http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/compe...91/316085.html

"The 60-year-old event rider had a rotational fall at fence five, a triple brush, while riding the 10-year-old gelding Arcilloso III in the CIC** competition. Bruno suffered fatal injuries as a result, but his horse was not hurt."

I always enjoyed watching him go. He had an enviable partnership with Harry -- they racked up numerous completions at Badminton and Burghley, although I don't think Harry ever had much respect for dressage.

This is such sad news. I was out all day and just now when I turned on my computer, I had that usual flash of dread that something might have gone wrong in eventing today. Saturdays, at least during the eventing season, are always like this for me, even though I love the sport. If only there was a way to keep everyone -- horses and humans -- safe.

    RIP, Monsieur Bouvier.

This is so horrible, may he rest in peace.

clivers, there were two falls at RH today that required transport, don't know for sure if they were rotational or not, but reports sound as though both riders are ok (one already released from hospital, don't know status of the second).
If it were easy, everybody would do it.

    FEI Statement;

Statement on fatal accident at CIC2* Barroca d'Alva (POR)

    2 March 2013

It is with the deepest regret that we announce that Mr Bruno Bouvier (FRA) suffered a fatal accident at 15.30 today (2 March 2013) while competing at the CIC2* in Barroca d’Alva (POR). Mr Bouvier, aged 60, and the 10-year-old gelding Arcilloso III, had a rotational fall at fence 5, a triple brush, which resulted in fatal injuries to the rider. The horse was uninjured in the fall.

At every FEI event, the maximum consideration is given to the safety and welfare of riders and horses.

Event Director Mr Nicholas Melbourne Hart and President of the Ground Jury Mr José Miguel Mexia de Almeida expressed their profound regret. "On behalf of the whole sport, we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Bruno Bouvier's family and to all his friends in the equestrian world.”

A police inquiry into the accident has been launched.
