    Default EHV-1 and returning racehorses

Does anyone know how the EHV-1 breakout is going to affect the return of racehorses northward? I have been seriously considering a purchase from the OBS 2 y.o. sale in March, but don't want to get stuck with a horse that might not be allowed to leave the state for an unknown time.

Thanks for any correct info you can provide!

Just a guess but I think you will have a bigger problem getting somewhere to accept the horse on this end then leave the state on that end. I haven't heard of any tracks not accepting horses from Florida but I believe it will be coming shortly.

I don't think it will affect movement out, unless the sales grounds are under quarantine. My SO is a racehorse vet and we have been shipping horses in and out all week. The bigger concern would be restrictions placed by the horses' destination.

Thanks, all! Guess I will just have to wait until closer to the sale to see what transpires with shipping out.

When their was an outbreak at Hawthorne last year, the ORC issued a statement that there would be movement restrictions for horses coming from the racetrack, as well as Illinois. As far as I know a similar statement hasn't been made regarding the situation in Florida as of yet.

One of my favourite equine-health related blogs has a lot of information about EHV-1

You might want to think about setting up somewhere to qt up here in case the training centres / WO decide to be extra cautious. Good luck with your prospective purchase - and c'mon FE!

As a person who has worked the “sales” for years I promise you this is a totally a “none issue”. If in doubt click on my screen name and home page. If still in doubt I will be happy to provide unbiased contract information to back me up.
Got to the sale, have fun and the best of luck.
Feel free to ask any questions of concern.
