Smile Top 10 Things I Don't Want to Hear at the Barn...

VERY LOW on my list but overheard today...

"Look at this puppy we found!"

A few weeks ago - "is that gate supposed to be open?" (No horse in sight.)

Aside from the usual (colic) anyone have any stories?

Any time there's an "Eeeew!!!!" followed by a "What IS that?!" it's never anything good.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

    !!!!!!!! CRASH !!!!!!!

Last time I heard this, new horse had ripped stall door off the wall, along with track. At other times it could be someone cast, breaking cross ties, or ?????

    Crashing noises are never good!

"Is this your dressage whip?" -- Said by a person who "borrowed" my good show whip without asking, then tossed it on the ground where it got mangled under hooves.

"Wasn't he in the far pasture?" -- New horse managed to successfully jump through each pasture to relocate himself closer to the mares.

"Do you hear kittens in X's stall wall?" -- A tabby kitten managed to fall all the way down the wall gap. We took the stall apart. And I now have a cat named Wald'in.

"Well he was sound when I brought him in last night..."

"The hives weren't THAT bad this morning"

    "Help me find a shoe"

"We've got 3 new horses moving in. They're all owned by kids without a trainer from the same family... You don't mind overseeing them, do you?"

I don't think he's supposed to go there? Followed by squealing and kicking.

"He/she didn't have that cut/scrape/swelling/lameness when I brought in yesterday" said by the college student who helps a few times a week, when the cut clearly has dry dirt caked on it from turnout

And that !!!!!!!!!!!CRASH!!!!!!!!!! one is my personal 'favorite' I hear that one a lot, between young horses, dogs, and cats, someone's always done something.

Default These dreaded words for the last dozen years:

    "Guess what Cloudy did?"

including digging a pit about 4 ft deep and then sitting on the edge with his front legs in it; demolishing his auto waterer in matted stall and then lying down all night, getting both sides from head to tail coated with manure and urine and water; demolishing his hay rack; demolishing a built-in feeder, eating the cord to his fans (2x), etc. etc.
Mr. Take-it-apart-to-see-how-it-works Cloudy for over a dozen years.

I've taken home the "look at the kitty someone dropped off here," Tobey is now 10 yrs old and a house cat.

And then there's "we've been waiting for you to help us.".....take off a shoe; treat a wound, load or unload hay and grain, etc., and the worst, holding the hind leg an over 16 hand 7 yoa stud to be gelded, oh yes, he got up 2x.

But it's not as bad as the middle-of-the-night calls I got in Atlanta from friends to get them out of jail; midnight calls to get people who cleaned friends' gutters and then demanded thousands of dollars off of friends' property; calls to protect judges' sons who were being bullied; to give friends rides in the middle of the night to grocery stores when their cars wouldn't start, etc.

ETA: i remembered the manure spreader incident, at Robert's barn in Florida, as well as some more "Cloudyisms."
"Your horse got caught between the (big) manure spreader and the wall is the aisle and we had to push him out of there."
"Your horse jumped his (wooden) paddock fence and then ran across the barnyard and jumped the hot wire to get to a mare. But it's ok as the mare is mean and chased him back over the hot wire."
"Your horse is hitting on every mare here at the show. Please teach your stallion manners." (He's not a stud but he thinks he is, and he's a serial wand-waver.)
From last BO before this one: "Does your horse mount mares?"
From a cother who moved to that same barn: "I saw Cloudy and Hattie making love in the pasture." (My response: "Were they both wearing clothes?" Answer: "yes.")
And today, horse related as after record rain for February here, I was trying to find the sand plant in the swamp to look at and order sand for the barn: "what kind of car are you driving?" My response, "am I going to have to cross water?" Answer from guy: "Well sure, lots of running water to cross." It was like driving across 6 flowing streams, going in, then again coming out. I thought the road would be muddy with puddles. Instead, the swamp was overflowing from the ogeechee river.

"Uh, Mom ? You're gonna want to come look at this"...

And then you find that one of his buddies took a huge bite out of your best horses elbow... flesh dangling, bone showing.....

I told him he better be more specific next time he has something like that to share.
