My OTTB, when I have been working her in the cold weather, has been coughing. It only happens during workouts not when she's turned out or in her stall only when riding, and only in cold weather. We had a day when the temp climbed up into warm temps and no cough.. So it's only happening when she's breathing the cold air during workouts. Could she need some MSM? Is there something else? The vet is expected here in a few weeks for spring physicals on the horses. And we will be adding her to the yearly lineup, so I can ask him some questions then, but if I really need to I can get a hold of him sooner. Advice?
One of mine has been doing the same thing... Pretty sure it's happening if his hay is a little dusty. He's already on daily MSM and the coughing doesn't happen every ride. It's the first time he's ever somewhat consistently done it though in the 6 years I own him.
how cold is cold? There area lot of studies out there if you search about damage cold can do to their lungs. It can cause a lot of inflammation and even bleeding. That is why it is recommended not to ride or work them in the cold. I would suspect if she is coughing that perhaps she is sensitive to the cold....and to reduce your work in cold weather.
