Default One case of neurological form of EHV-1 at HITS Ocala.

The horse has been removed to the University of Florida and his former tent stable (#7) at HITS is quarantined. WEF is not accepting trailer-ins from Ocala.

I'm really surprised that no one on this forum has commented yet. There are four pages of comments already on the Hunter/Jumper forum.

Well, it's not related to sport horse breeding, so maybe that is why?

Well, I have two homebreds showing at HITS Ocala, now sold and with show barns. I suspect I'm not the only regular poster on this forum in that situation. As well, one of the young horse shows is upcoming in the Ocala area. We have a number of sport horse breeders in and around Ocala. To me, it's a frightening virus and worth a mention. Two horses left for home from Barn 7 after the EHV-1 positive horse began showing symptoms without their people being aware of the illness. Incubation time is 2 -7 or so days. Probably worth a mention.

It is definitely a frightening virus. I'm reading about this outbreak at HITS in Ocala on FB and elsewhere and complaints are that communication is poor.

Do shippers disinfect their trailers really good between loads?
    How does this virus spread?

What about Rocking Horse Winter III Horse Trials next weekend in Altoona, FL? There are a LOT of eventers that are leasing stalls at HITS Post Time Farm in the winter because it's so affordable.

As of today, Feb. 27, HITS Barn 6 and 7 are under quarantine and the HITS showground is closed to incoming or outgoing shipping. Five horses stabled outside of HITS in Ocala area have tested positive for EHV-!. One horse outside the WEF showgrounds has blood-tested pos. for EVH-1 and that barn in Grand Prix Village is under quarantine. The FEI barn at WEF is closed. Current upcoming FEI show jumping classes are cancelled.

does anyone know if all these farms are connected via a common link? i.e.; each barn had a horse(s) at the original HITS show in Ocala?

Just wondering if the cases in Wellington are related or not. My trainer comes back from Wellington in 3 weeks and deciding if I should wait until she is back a few weeks before bringing my mare back there for training.

    TIA

Pretty frightening how it is spreading so rapidly across Florida. I can't help but wonder if the common link is one or more of the following:

    - farriers
    - vets
    - dentists
    - massage therapists, chiropractors or other bodywork specialists
    - grooms
    - shippers
    - feed/hay vendors

I am sorry for anyone with horses down there - everyone must be worried sick!

That's a great point, DownYonder. I hadn't considered a few of these widely-ranging folk, especially the dentists. I hope that all of the shippers are sterilizing their vans between loads as best they can!

I believe I just read today that there's at least one horse who they could not find a link or connection to the shows and are unsure how or where it got the virus.
Also on the UF site they mentioned that it can be spread thru the air and there
have been no studies as to how far it can travel once airborn.

Couldn't help but laugh at this......HITS and affordable in the same sentence.

I have heard so many rumors that my head has been spinning the past week. I attended the mandatory meeting at the HITS this afternoon. Tom Stuzierri and the state veterinarians shed some light to what is happening:
    1) There were NO NEUROLOGICAL cases of EHV-1. Even the horse that was taken to UF had the RESPIRATORY form of the disease.
    2) After the initial case that was confirmed last Thursday, they started extensive testing of horses on the showgrounds and outside as well. One of these tests revealed a second case outside the HITS grounds. This horse had been on the grounds before and might have contracted the disease there. This is why they decided to quarantine HITS.

Andras, go to freshfromflorida.com and see that the state ag. dept. site says the horse that went to UF last week DID test positive for EHV-1 wild strain.
I keep hearing show participants and mgrs. minimizing the seriousness of this whole mess. Guess they don't want people to leave the show or lose $$$.

I don't know if they will be able to truly pin down the route of transmission, but my money is on dentists, shippers, and/or grooms, as those are usually the most wide-ranging groups. A friend of mine in the Ocala area told me there is particular concern in some circles about the grooms, because the language barrier makes it a bit tougher to impress on them the need for strict bio-security measures. She called her grooms together and told them they are not under any circumstances to go to HITS, even to to visit friends or family. Her Spanish is pretty good, so she was also able to tell them the reason, but she is still a bit worried. She is trying to take all the precautions she can - she has also canceled for the time being a scheduled visit from a traveling dentist.

DY, also farriers and vets from outlying areas go to these big shows to pick up additional money in the winter. I know in the past talking to several who would be "outta town for several weeks" and unable to service their regular clients. So who knows how it's traveling.
