Default Why would a Squirrel Eat Paint off a Terra Cotta Yard Decoration?

For the third time this week (that I've noticed), a youngish squirrel is eating the green paint off a terra cotta yard decoration - a small painted sun that I got in a trip to Mexico years ago.

At first I thought it was honing its teeth so I looked at the piece and it's not chewing on the terra cotta, it's only on the dark green accent paint.

I'm wondering if it needs a mineral in the paint or if it's getting some kind of 'high' or if it just tastes good.

The other squirrels have never eaten the paint, and I've owned the terra cotta piece for about 15 years.

Thanks for any suggestions. Maybe I'll put a mineral block out there and see if I can get the squirrel to switch snack sources.

A former lead poisoning risk assessor here. Lead has a sweet taste. That is why children would get started on eating the paint chips. You might have lead paint on your decoration. Easy to test. Just buy some lead swabs at Lowes/Home Depot.
