Appsolute - LOVE your first Appy - the one with no QH. I agree that I am a fan of the "old school Appy" - I remember when they were a TYPE and not just QHs (or QH x TB) with spots.

I think that old type though, was a result of alot of various blood being allowed in the breed. I think all that different blood created some VERY hardy horses! With good bone and big hard hooves and almost like a hybrid-vigor. I know the old Appies had all sorts of unknown blood - and even had Saddlebred, Morgan, Standardbred, etc.

That said - I LOVE a non-QH type Appy, The more old-type - that had a smoother look to the body, a thicker neck, the big bone and round big feet. And yes, even the jug-head and rat tail.

Well, you must remember that as a breed, the Appaloosa was almost destroyed in the late 19th, early 20th century. When Hatley and Thompson created the registry in the 1930s, they had to permit outside blood. The government had forced the Nez Perce to cross to draft (so they would not have buffalo/war horses), and that blood had to be diluted out. The first crosses were what decent Appies they could find with Arabs, TB, and yes - QH - but ranch bred horses not today's Impressive-bred "Herefords at Halter." (No real Appy could have HYPP.) The famous Appy Joker B was out of two registered QH parents (obviously, his dam - a roan - was a "closet" Appy! LOL). Hatley favored the Arab crosses to start and did not approve of the heavy QH crossing of the last 20-30 years. The Confetti (Bear Paw) line does include ASB back there a bit.

Yep - "Dancer" was quite a horse! Such an all rounder - like true appies should be!

And you are correct! That is Windance farm - Gale is an old family friend (my dad met my step mom at one of her little shows in 1988!). Riley (current appie) was lucky enough to do some growing up there.

And you are also correct, and as Sandy M points out, appaloosas had to be salvaged from what little blood was left after the US Gov did its best to destroy the breed.

But the whole quarter horses with spots thing is something that has become popular over the last few decades - a real shame.

And that horse you linked to - what a horse! That is my type of appie for sure.

Too bad I took my guy off the market.... He would be perfect for you... He's a 4 yo Grulla app with 4 whites a blanket star and snip. By Waps rolls royce out of cold love a tb by not for love. He's basically a tb with spots jumps amazing and good temperament. Definitely event/ jumper type

Where to find an Appy for jumping? My backyard! Just kidding, I wouldn't part with him. I was recently "gifted" an older appy gelding by my BIL....only been western, farm ridden and hadn't been ridden in "a few years". Big old gelding came with a honking case of rain rot and missing some pounds, but man, is he a cool horse! Takes everything in stride and is shaping up to be quite the cute spotted hunter, especially for an older dog learning new tricks!
Friend of mine has a Wap baby and she is the coolest horse. No spots, but talent up to her eyeballs.

Try Gateway Farms in Acampo, Ca. Might be too far away for you to look, but they have warmblood/appy crosses by Wapiti Sundance Club, with Wap in his pedigree.

My friend got a great appy cross OTT, but I don't know if this is a practical option. Not sure how many of those they make intended for racing!

But seriously, he's one of the coolest horses I know. She does primarily jumpers with him, but he was a solid hunter, good cross country, and the best horse to ride bareback. And gorgeous to top it all off.
