Default The Care and Keeping of Calf Manna (or: my sister's a doof and maybe spoiled 1/3 bag)

My sister in her infinite wisdom elected to leave 1/3 of a bag of Calf Manna in the dressing room of the horse trailer. I didn't discover this until yesterday, when it had been in there for a month and a half. The windows on the trailer have been shut and the bag was rolled down. It still smells and looks normal.

I'd hate to waste it, but the last thing I want to do is give it to someone if it's gone bad. I thought about offering it to a horse and seeing if the horse will eat it, but my horse ate a bird's nest complete with egg once, so I am not sure he is the best judge.

I bet my gelding would do the same! He just digs in to whatever is in his dish...I can add whole bute tablets, and he eats them like they are grain...

It does make for easy medicating if ever I need to give him anything...

In fairness, I don't think he'd do it twice, especially as the egg was rotten and he got a piece of egg shell stuck in his gum. For some reason that is also the last time my mother (a good horsewoman, mind you) said "Aww, no he won't" when I said "Mom, do not put that near Tip, he will eat it." (T also eats bute tabs out of my hand.)

It's pellets right? Why would it go bad, unless it got wet? If it still smells and looks normal, it should be fine. Just my opinion, though. Don't want to get sued!

I am also confused as to how it would go bad unless it became damp - and shows signs of mold or other spoiling.

Ditto the others. If it hasn't been raining cats and dogs for the past 6 weeks and looks and smells really good it is probably okay. The bag of Calf Manna I'm feeding from has been open since September in my feed room, stored correctly, and it is fine.

Thanks- I don't personally feed it so I'm unfamiliar with the longevity of the product and didn't want to make a mistake out of ignorance. I was going to offer the remainder to a friend.

Calf Manna lasts a long time. If it looks and smells fine, it's good.

If you live anywhere around here, it's mostly been in a deep freeze.
