    Its a bacteria and there are many strains, but as some one else said they all do produce gas. I would guess the vets have thought of this as a possible diagnosis.

    Was an abdominocentesis (belly tap) done? Perhaps that could have caused it. I've seen it in a cow with severe pneumonia but the subcutaneous emphysema was up around the cows neck and throat latch area.
    Let us know how she does and if they figure out the cause!

    The mare was discharged to a rehab facility today, but still has the swelling which they are keeping an eye on. Here is a picture that shows where the swelling is around her abdomen:
    Proud owner of a Slaughter-Bound TB from a feedlot, and her surprise baby...!
