She foaled a healthy filly on Tuesday and yesterday she was at Rood and Riddle having surgery for a bruised colon. I guess it is touch and go.

Does anyone here have experience with the problem and the possible odds on her geting well again?

If she does, can she ever be bred again?

Oh nooooo! I saw where she foaled and it weighed 140#, so I guess the size was the culprit. Never had that experience, but prayers for RA and her new baby. Sure hope she'll be ok.

If the colon loses the blood supply and dies, that part will need to be removed, if possible. If it is small colon, that is even worse. IF she recovers, she could be bred again, but there is a long way to go until then..

The article also states she spent 3 days at Rood & Riddle after foaling last year also. Makes me think her career as a broodmare may be over.

I would think no. We all know how this goes. The mare needs to recovery from surgery. We know what demands are placed on our mares from the foal in the 1st month. They will be wanting what's best for both. I wouldn't think that would be RA trying to raise her foal.

My best guess. As breeders we know why. Now when all of Rachel's fans get wind of that look out for all the nonsense that will be spewed.

I don't see it happening. Rachel will need so much recovery time indoors, for one thing. If there was small bowel resection, her diet will need to be tightly controlled as well.

Baby needs to be outside being a baby, with a mom who can keep up. By the time Rachel's ready for turnout again, the filly will probably have bonded to the nurse mare.

I had this happen to my black-type stakes placed TB broodmare in 2005. She was in Hagyard in KY. It appeared that the foal kicked the intestine and severly bruised it on the way out. She decomped the next day and we had a prolonged hospitalization. I also had to have a nurse mare for the foal. I was told it wouldn't happen the next breeding. I left her open for 2006 but bred her for a 2007 foal.

She went late in 2007 and I thought she was in labor one night so I really watched her closely all night long. The next morning I saw some blood in her stool and she just looked NQR. I called my local vet, had them rehydrate, and sedate her. I bundled her up and got her to U of F and she went immediately on the table. We lost her due to a ruptured cecum (she was not impacted more likely was due to large foal) but were able to c-section the 2007 colt who was dead on arrival. But they gave him an injection that re-started his heart and he ended up making it. I stopped breeding race TB after this one

So.....if she had a problem on the last one and this one. I would retire her from carrying / delivering a foal.

This is why they should allow ET in Thoroughbreds. All these wonderful genes are lost if for some reason the mare can't carry her own foal... seems senseless...

They said no news is good news so I imagine she is holding her own at this point. I imagine her breeding days are over regardless of the outcome however. Some mares just don't follow the adage of the uterus determining the size of the fetus. I have a mare like that as well who is sadly retired from the breeding shed due to that. Rachel's dam also has foaling complications and is retired from breeding which makes me nervous about breeding my mare's foal some day.

Laurie is right the DANGEROUS side of ET's etc is that people continue to breed flaws that nature would eliminate without fully understanding or having to be responsible for the consequences.

I suspect with as much breeding management Stonestreet does they were well aware of the potential for RA to inherit her mothers issues. I don't think she owes anyone anything and frankly if her retirement were in jeopardy I'd donate to it ...she entertained a lot of fans and it is we that owe her.

Also Laurie Lotta Kim was in foal to Lookin at Lucky for a 2013 no idea if she still is .

Jingling for her and have total empathy with this motherhood stuff. Many women died in childbirth before C sections became standard. I too would error on the side of natural selection and genetics here.

She earned 3.5M those who pocketed that can well afford to comfortably retire her. I earn 'a lot' less haha and have kept several horses thru their retirements.

My mistake about Lotta Kim. I read that she had only had two foals since Rachel and assumed they had stopped trying.
