I have several sections of Christmas cactus pieces with roots in jars of water - can anybody tell me if I need any special soil to pot them in? Also, I have some pretty ancient potted ones, where the soil is locked in like concrete - are there any tricks to repotting them? They do seem perfectly happy as they are!
I' no expert here, but I have a couple. The biggest, oldest one is years old and has never been repotted. I put it out in the summer in the garden under an old willow tree so it does not get extreme sun, but plenty of light, and keep it somewht watered. It comes into bloom after Christmas and blooms for about three months.
I felt sorry for it once, and attempted to repot it - the soil was compacted like yours, but the roots were really quite small compared to the size of the plant.
And they do like to be pot bound.
I do fertilize it.
