Brought my horses in tonight and was grooming my TB when I noticed he had a small cut (probably the size of a half dollar, not deep just got the hair off) between his front legs that was scabbed over (so maybe had been there for a day or two), but the weird part is that he is swollen in the area just on the left side of his chest/between his legs where the cut is located. There is a decent amount of fluid, only a little heat is detectable, and he doesn't mind you touching it. I'll be calling the vet Monday morning, but any thoughts in the meantime? I cleaned it and that's it. He is acting totally normal despite this. TIA!
The cut quite possibly came with an opportunity for some bruising/ and or a small puncture that has gotten infected. It's not uncommon for fluid to migrate downward, and the left side was a convenient route.
Current on Tetanus?
Some riders change their horse, they change their saddle, they change their teacher; they never change themselves.
I've had the same thing happen a number of times on a few of my horses - asked vet about it, he said it should go away in a few days or week, and they always have. If it persists more than two weeks or there is no change or gets significantly worse, I'd be worried.
