Needing to find a low starch grain with NO alfalfa of any kind in it, preferably Blue Seal, Iam in NE.

Did you call Blue Seal and ask what products they have to offer and where they might be found?

Is NE the North East, or Nebraska?

There are so many types of feeds--it makes my head swim. I decide by going to my feed store of choice and reading labels to find what I need.

And there isn't any form of "grain" with "no starch" that I'm aware of . . .

Triple Crown Low Starch has no alfalfa and is...low starch.

Just looked at the tag of my legends performance (12.9%) and it has Alfalfa meal...so you can eliminate that!

Yeah I looked at the Legends Performance too and the Blue Seal Carb guard (<11%) and it has Alfalfa also! Sorry!

I asked the rep about no alfalfa and I believe they suggested Demand pellets. Not sure how low starch it is though.

did you check Nutrena? They are a little pricey but if the quality of the grain is good you should be able to feed less, as long as they get nutrition instead of calories! Buckeye maybe?

I have been very happy with the Nutrena Safechoice Special Care. It is a low starch formula. It is about $18 a bag. No corn products. My morgan does very well on it and his digestion has been a lot better.

Purina makes a ration balance called Well-Solve and it comes in a low starch form

WellSolve comes in 2 varieties, L/S and W/C. Neither are ration balancers

The W/C - weight control - is more like a Lite feed, but still fed at minimally 3lb and that's for a very inactive 1000lb horse.

The L/S - low starch - has a 6lb/inactive 1000lb horse feeding rate

. I agree. He sounds like an easy keeper, so this would keep it simple, as well as keeping the calories and starch down. If he needs more, you can add Cocosya Oil, etc.

I feed Wellsolve LS and think it's great. But the #1 ingredient is alfalfa.

FWIW, Blue Seal doesn't have a lot of "low starch" products...their CarbGuard is low, but aside from that, your options are limited if you're looking for low to no starch.

Adding: the NSC value should really be starch + WSC (not ESC). Blue seal has decided to define NSC on their own terms apparently, which results in a lower NSC number, albeit incorrect. So, add starch + WSC to get NSC values.

The most recent values I received from Blue Seal were correct-- Starch + WSC
