Nurse mare needed ASAP DE. Update!
As stated in title ! Needed in S DE please call 302-228-9020.
Mare is currently holding her own. She has a ruptured uterine artery that luckily bled into the right broad ligament instead of the uterus or abdominal cavity creating enough pressure to slow or stop the bleed. Ultrasound shows a football sized hematoma. She received clotting meds and 5 liters of fluid. She is now up and her color is a little better but still not pink. Her milk production has drastically dropped due to her loss of fluid volume. Her day old filly has no interest in milk replacer at this time. We have even mixed it with some banked colostrum. She is getting some milk from the mare but we don't think enough. Mare is still not out of the woods so we still are looking to line up a nurse mare.

Mare doing well
Just wanted to let people know the mare is doing great. It's a miracle she made it at all. She is a maiden mare and was so happy with her baby, I don't think she was ready to say goodbye to it.
This is the first mare (of 20+) we will foal this year for other people and three for ourselves. Even though this one wasn't one of mine, you still get attached to them, and I'm glad this one had a positive outcome.
Thanks for all the well wishes.

Very good news.
If you don't mind me asking, what was the complication, what were the symptoms, what caused the turn around to a good outcome? Always trying to learn from these cases. Thanks!

back in the saddle
Uterine artery rupture.
She had alot of ventral edema prior to foaling. Had a pretty much textbook delivery. Took longer to pass placenta with the help of oxytocin. About 30 hrs post foaling started showing mild signs of colic that progressed quickly into her going down, grey gums, cold & clammy. Very shocky. Temp dropping. Grunting & moaning.Gave her Banamine & Dexamethasone IV very hard to find vein. Laid on right side for a good 30 min. We knew what we were dealing with and that it wasn't going to be good. She got up on her own. Slowly gave her 5 liters of fluids & clotting meds via catheter. Ultrasound showed a football size hematoma in right broad ligament. Her laying on her right side most likely slowed the bleed enough to start clotting and probably saved her life. Her milk production dropped due the the rapid loss of fluid volume. All seems normal now. Bloodwork was good. She will be on antibiotics to prevent infection. If she had bled into her uterus or abdominal cavity she would not be here.

Wow.... I didn't know there were clotting meds available like that.
What was the dex for? Won't that increase bloodflow?
Sounds like she was VERY lucky.

The dex is used to reduce the inflammatory cascade, they can easily go into multi organ failure. She will have to be monitored closely for the next 3-4 weeks.
