This is the 2nd time I've heard this vet recommend worming an actively colicking
horse. As in, horse got banamine already- still wants to roll.... vet recommends treating horse right then with wormer. My gut says Hell no am I putting that in my horse right now. Anyone ever heard of this?
Disclaimer-neither are my horses. The one is happening right now. She trusts this vet. I don't.

Err...I've NEVER heard of that. We give gastrogard and ranitidine to actively colicking horses.

I'm not a vet, but I've only heard of wormer in rare cases causing colic, not treating it?? Did she ask why the vet suggested that??
ETA--I mean, even if the horse HAD worms that was causing it that much distress, worming it wouldn't rid the horse of them immediately...and on top of that, worming the horse (killing and passing them) would probably cause even more distress if it had an "infestation" to cause colic I would think. JMO!

I've heard banamine, Robaxin, omeprazole, ranitidine, Tums, torbugesic, rompun, dormosedan, and tubing with oil - but never worming.

It's to treat the worms if that's why he's colicking- that's what we were told the last time.

^I added this probably after you read it.
This is why I have fecals done regularly.

That's my thought exactly.

Same vet twice or two different vets?

As weird as it sounds, I've heard it before. Double dose ivermectin for spasmic colic. I've never done it but my mother claims she has with success.

Just out of curiosity, what is the reasoning behind it?

Which dewormer? Totally reaching and I don't think I would ever dare, but maybe because fenbendazole (none of the others AFAIK) has some properties that reduce acid production . . . ?

I've hear of a 5 day panacur being used as it actually has an ingredient in it similar to ulcer meds.........can't think of the name of it off the top of my head.....used on my girl and it worked who was colicing on and off real mildly.

But then why not use ulcer meds?

I can see saying to deworm the horse after the colic, when the horse is recovered, if you think worms were the cause. But DURING a colic? That blows my mind.

Why not simply ask the vet why they suggest this?

It's not my horse, I haven't talked to the vet this time. I was around the last horse that did this and then was told it was in case he was colicking from worms. I wanted to see if others had heard of this.
