top dam-lines from Holstein
I'm very interested to learn more about the top producing/influential dam-lines from Holstein including those that have contributed to approved stallions and top performance horses. Any good sources of reference are greatly appreciated!

I'll be adding a Holsteiner mare to the herd therefore want to make sure I focus on suitable mares that will meet my breeding goals.

I asked because there are many great stamms in Holstein. And every great stamm has particular branches that are most prolific, and those that are not. I wanted you to know that just becuase a particular stamm like 741 may have produced a great stallion, doesn't mean that every mare from that stamm is good. It takes an intimate knowledge of the stamm to know which ones are the good ones and which ones are not. Part of what has made Holstein so succesful is that ability to know how to select their breeding stock. You don't want to be on the wrong end of a cull when that selection process is taking place. Buying a filly from a mare that is already producing improves your chances greatly. Knowing that family intimately even more so. A stamm # isn't much more then a catalog # that helps you know where to look for more information. Keep in mind the best stamms in the world have produced plenty of crap horses. Those horses must find homes too. Good luck with your search, learning about the stamms is a good start, but don't let a good stamm # convince you to buy an average mare. The mare must be a good example of her great mothers in her past, otherwise her stamm # will mean nothing.
