I've actually done project management for years but never had the cert. Finally decided to go for it. Was so nervous walking into that test!! heh.

My husband got his a couple years ago. He crammed for like two weeks and then just went in and took it. PM's are quite in demand, so you've definitely got an edge if you need to job search!

Congratulations! It definitely helps in the job market. When DH was unemployed he couldn't get companies to look at him because he didn't have his PMP. (He'd only successfully managed an 80 member worldwide service team, but hey, he didn't have the letters for the certificate.) As soon as he got the certification he started getting interviews, so it is an important designation to have.

PMI is the body that offers PMP certification.

All the info you need is on the website. 35 contact hours of training+4500 professional hours of work in approved project areas.

I took a training class last month and will take the PMP exam next week.

There is also a certification for folks without as much project mgmt experience already. The PMI website explains your options.

For studying, I recommend an exam prep course if you can find one that isn't too pricey. Many universities have continuing Ed programs with proj mgmt courses. I wrote my own flashcards from the PMBOK guide and found they really helped. The Dummies PMP book is a good supplement to the PMBOK because it delves into some areas more in depth.

The PMP exam is startlingly challenging, in part because so much of the focus for certification is on elements of formal project management that rarely came into play in my field, and in part because unlike the practice exams (at least my year) the actual exam had a number of non-factual, non-quantitative rather fuzzy and subjective questions. I passed mine in 2000 or 2001.

Glad to see I am not alone in my assessment. I have some trenchant observations about PMI, particularly with respect to their continuing education criteria, but don't want to take the bloom off the rose.

For some reason the Strategic Development arm of my former organization seemed to prefer MBA's for the folks who ran Global Programs. While an MBA can be a great management credential, it interestingly doesn't contain much of practical, hands-on value for actually running a program or even a lone project. Then again all the Sr VP's and the Executive VP who ran Strategic Development were fired when that function was eliminated and Program Management was transferred to Global R&D.
