I have a horse coming tomorrow. I've known the horse for many years and I know the barn the horse is currently at. Barn is a small show barn, horses go to shows regularly and there is a fairly consistent turnover rate, either a horse coming or going every other month. Would you still do a full on quarantine?

I have 2 different paddocks available, one where the horse would have absolutely no physical contact with other horses but could see them. The other shares a fence line but has electric that I could use (but rarely do).

Any opinions? I'm leaning towards the no physical contact but I also am very cautious about bringing new horses in. FWIW the BO at the other barn is very nice and definitely wouldn't hide any sickness or anything from the HO or me.

If you are set up so you can do it, do it. Nothing can be lost by doing so, where if you don't, you may have wished you did!

If it's possible, yes. And it's more for the new horse than yours IMHO. Moving can cause some stress and stress can suppress the immune system. So even if the horse is totally healthy and coming from a great barn, he may not have necessary immunity to stuff that might be at YOUR barn (even though no one is sick).

I really prefer having a little time for them to be separated if it's possible.

FWIW, my mare moved just yesterday to a new barn and she is being kept separate though neither she nor the others have any known illness. It's not a "true" quarantine situation where we're freaking out about changing clothes after handling one vs another like you'd have with some sort of an outbreak, but it does give them time to settle in.

Quarantine with no contact if at all possible. Better to do it when there was no reason to do it and you lose nothing than not do it and wish you had. My rule of thumb....when in question always err on the side of caution.

if the horse is utd on shots and local vet has been seeing the horse, i don't see any reason to QT, but if it makes you feel better, go ahead.

The best reason to quarantine is the considerable traffic in the first barn.

Giving a horse 10 days to look at, from a distance, his new herd mates makes sense.
