So I have two horses that I use the recalled coated wire, roller mouth Happy Mouth bits. I understand why they were recalled, I experienced it first hand, LOL (broke one in the air over an XC fence, another in the middle of a dressage school, and third one in the middle of a grid). But I loved them anyway, and I just made sure I had several of them on hand.
So, when they were recalled, I figured they'd rejigger them a bit and then re-release them. Well, I just went to order some, and guess what, still not available. Only Happy Mouths are the regular metal bits coated with the plastic. None of the coated wire. So I look in to Nathe bits, the only other kind that I've used with similar success, and guess what, they are in the middle of a large recall also, with my preferred type no longer available.
I have two horses here who have made it clear over the years that they have no tolerance for metal bits, even plastic coated ones. None. They like the soft, flexible coated wire, (IOW a stiff mullen mouth isn't going to work either).
So what do I do? I'm down to the bottom of my supply (I have one loose ring and one full cheek left), and I'm getting nervous. Does anyone know of any similar bits that might work for my guys?
Lotta-B bless you. I'm going to order in bulk, LOL.
One of my two fussy ones I'm going try to transition to something else, but with my oldster (18 this year and still going strong with my students) it isn't worth it--I've tried many times over all the years I've had him. I figure he's got about 5-8 years of working life left (fingers crossed) so if I buy one bit for each year, I should be able to get him through, LOL.
