My 4yo Boxer girl hasn't been feeling well. It started a few weeks ago when she decided she didn't feel like eating her kibble like normal. We changed flavors and brands and she'd be a little more interested for a few days. Days she didn't eat much she'd vomit up some phlegm. Didn't think it was a huge deal, she's not much of a chow hound to begin with.

She went down fast Friday night/Saturday morning so we rushed her into the vet - thought maybe she was having reflux and didn't want to eat because of that so got anti-nausea meds and Pepcid AC. Took stomach x-rays to rule out foreign body. Was even worse yesterday so they took her back and ran a CBC and chem panel: WBC was high, slightly anemic (assumed because of lack of nutrition). Vet suspects Atypical Addison's and started her on prednisone and doxy.

Dog is very depressed now, lost a fair amount of weight and still is not into eating. Got her to eat some scrambled eggs and a small piece of cheese this morning. Parents are considering putting her down because they can't afford the week of observation at the specialist clinic vet advised, so vet told them to give the steroids a week.

Any advice? Any ideas to get more food in her?

Sounds like she needs a consult with an internist. Doesnt necessarily need a week of observation. Most "consults" can end with home treatment and a review of bloodwork already done.

I think they would also recommend an abdominal ultrasound.

Exactly what STB said. A friend's dog was just diagnosed and is home and doing great.

Luckily she seemed to perk up yesterday while I was at work and is now interested in eating people food, they gave her roast beef and mashed potatoes. Definitely much perkier now Hopefully that means the prednisone is doing the trick. If she doesn't keep improving I'll have to find an internist when my tax refund comes in next week/week after, finances are pretty tight on the homefront right now But, she ate her pills in a piece of cheese last night and this morning instead of me having to pill her by hand, so that's an improvement, too!

Mom & Dad decided to put her down yesterday Nothing the vet did seemed to pull her around and she just kept getting worse. Goodbye, good girl

Just saw this and Im so sorry!! They leave a HUGE hole! Hugs and prayers - can't fix the pain but I can tell you you sure aren't alone! Very, very sorry.
