Default What is this darn thing called?

Help me here - I'm trying to remember the common name of a thing that barrel racers use - two pieces of thick leather kind of sewn together with a flexible metal thingee in the middle - that you can encourage a horse with that makes 'em go more because of the noise - it makes a slapping sound. It's not a bat - but I'll be darned if I can find it on Google with any reasonable kind of name.

What the heck is it called?

No, a quirt is braided. This is flat. Here's a picture, and I guess this is one name for it, but if I google it, this is the only hit I get, other than baseball bats:

There must be a more common name for it but????

I always just heard them called them bats or dogging bats.

Dogging bats - that's it! But be careful when you google it - definitely not safe for work or children if I remember...

Thank you!!!!! I have been going nuts trying to remember that!

ETA: also called a "pig slapper"

I order those for our tack department at the feed store and it's called a dogging bat in the catalog. They make a very satisfying slappy noise on just about anything with hardly any impact.

I took to calling it a scat bat. I keep one, it's really handy for a stubborn trailer loader
