Just wanted to update. After a lot of improvement the horse went back to 5/5 lame last night with heat/pulse in toe. This morning leg was swollen, mild temp. Vet was out early and she found two abscesses getting ready to blow. One at his toe and one big mushy spot at coronet band on heel. Vet is confident it's abscesses and said that heel abscess of probably the result of a hard blow and bruise. So now horse is wrapped and all that and I am waiting for these to start draining. I have the horse booted and with access to turnout so he can move if desired. Poor guy! I hope this is over soon. I have a lot of new gray hairs!

Abscesses are draining. Horse is super happy and by yesterday was cantering in his little pasture. The abscess in his heel was huge, the opening along the coronet band is nearly 2 inches long. I'm relieved, it's been a long scary week, but we still have some work ahead getting these healed up.

I am posting on this older post because this is very similar to what I am experiencing right now. Bruin is 5/5 lame on RH (wish I could post video). After packing with Epsom Salt poultice and wrapping hoof for 36 hrs he walked out of his stall sound. My farrier checked his hoof and could not find any obvious signs of abscess. As he was walking back to his stall he became 5/5 lame again! I soaked his hoof in warm water and epsom salt and he walked sound again! I wrapped his hoof and back legs and out him to bed. He is on bute so vet is not coming until thursday so he won't have any bute in his system and we can block and see what is going on. Her thought is abscess or DDFT tear in hoof. but neither should feel better.....

Good luck with your guy! I had a mare with intermittent lameness for weeks earlier this year. Vet came twice, felt confident it was an abscess both times. Lots of soaking and wrapping and finally she blew a massive abscess along her coronary band. It healed well, but what a headache!

Juliette, was there a lot of swelling and heat above the hoof? Did she have a pounding pulse?
