Default cat anatomists/physiologists: Have y'all figure out how a purr is produced?

Long ago, in the pre-internet age, rumor had it that no one could quite figure out how the venerable purr feature is produced.

Yeah, you could slice up a cat's throat and look around... you could think about how it was related to breathing.... you could notice that cats don't seem to get tired doing it.

But no one gave the full, Done explanation of the purr.

I read somewhere that purring could be a form of healing that the purring occurs on a fequency that ultra-sound does.

I also think it was discovered how cats purred. off to google it.

    found this:
It turns out that cats have special wiring! The wiring travels from the brain to the muscles in the voice box, and this wiring is able to vibrate the muscles so that they act as a valve for air flowing past the voice box. The muscles work both during inhalation and exhalation, which creates the impression that cats can purr continuously. The air passes through the valve, which opens and closes rapidly to create the purring sound.

I found another link to the base mechanics of purring here: http://messybeast.com/cat_talk.htm which is a treasure trove of cat information from base care to basic colour genetics, colour patterns and genetic anomalies like curled tails and polydactylism.
