Hello, I've tried searching on this topic, but haven't come up with much.

I'm wondering if anyone knows about the risks of IM or IV (not sure how it's usually given) Polyglycan on a horse's stomach. I understand it has glucosamine in it, but I'm not sure if glucosamine is only hard on the horse's stomach if it's ingested through oral supplements. Anyone had good or bad experiences with Polygycan on their sensitive horse? Or, for that matter, Legend or Adequan?

I will also be asking the vet about this as well, but wondered about people's personal experiences.

I have the world's most sensitive princess and the pea horse and she never, ever showed any sign of gastric discomfort following Legend or Adequan.

I have a horse with a very sensitive stomach and he had no problems at all on Polyglycan given IV.

Yep Polyglycan is given IV. I've given it in the past without issue.

Chiming in, I have never noticed any negative gut effects from Polyglycan IV or from Adequan in my experiences. If you are worried about it though, you can always give some Gastrogard or other ulcer treatment prophylactically at the time of injection or right beforehand.

I've never heard of issues with Adequan, Legend or the other IM/IV joint options. The only one that carries some risk is Tildren, although most vets give it in a slow IV drip and give banamine along with it to minimize the risk.

I have a horse that does amazing with 5cc in the vein and 5cc in the muscle at the same time. The vet said some horses do best with chondroitin in the muscle, while HA is best IV. Glucosamine can go both ways and work well. And for anyone that didn't know... Those are the three ingrediants in polyglycan.

I don't know... I did HA for myself IM one time and the results were pretty dramatic (now I go hide under a rock!). Can't compare to IV though

That's interesting, I have heard of it given that way plenty of times, and my vet whom I trust recommended it - it is definitely off label use, but then again, Polyglycan is really intended to be a surgical lavage, so giving it IV is also off label. She gave first dose IV (just because she was there) and I gave subsequent doses IM. It worked seemingly well and horse didn't fall over and die, so I assume it's okay.
