My horse came up with a stifle issue in Nov. Big name vet recommended Legend IV x3/ once a week. Local vet says she often uses them in conjunction. Adequan subQ every 2-3 days, followed by 1 injection of Legend. Then drop the Legend and continue with Adequan.
I read on a recent thread that the current reccomendation for Adequan is loading dose, off for 6 mos. Repeat loading dose, no proven effect for continuing Adequan.
Who uses both, what is your protocol, and what do the studies say?
I have elderly horses with various injuries/arthritis. I use Legend 1x/month and Adequan 1x/week. You could probably do the loading dose of Adequan, then use it and Legend once/month.
Granted, mine are extreme cases, but I've always had better luck with continuous use of Adequan, rather than stop and restart.
I don't use either anymore because I like Pentosan better but when I did use it I would give the loading dose of Adequan ie every four days for 7 doses then give Legend 24 hours out before the race.
The only Adequan protocol that was researched and found to have had disease-modifying effects is the 1 vial every 7 days for 28 days protocol. Other dosing schedules that people have come up with have no proven benefit.
I can't comment on Legend dosing, as I've never seen them used in combination.
When I used both, I used them each once a month. I cannot recall if I gave both on the first or if I gave one on the first and one on the 15th....it has been several years.
I eventually retired the horse because we just could not keep her sound.
