In case anyone missed the maiden run the outcome wasn't a won by daylight over the field. Rather its impressive race because Market Quote won ... in her first start, in a mile race, and by being left behind at the gate by 10+ lengths to the field!

Joe Talamo rode Market Quote for trainer John Shirreffs. The 4-yo After Market filly is owned by breeders Marty and Pam Wygod.

Talamo said after watching video of the race, he was even more convinced the comeback was extraordinary.

“Trust me,” he said. “I watched it a few times and it was unbelievable for the horse to do that. She’s pretty special. John was like, ‘Wow.’ We all were.”

On Monday morning, Shirreffs said, "It was absolutely amazing. I was talking to [owner] Marty Wygod and he said she stood in the gate for 3.7 seconds. The After Markets are really coming around. She has that real nice long stride. She's close to 17 hands. After Market had one of the quickest closing quarters of a turf horse. She has that ability to quicken."

As for whether Market Quote's next race will be in a stakes event, Shirreffs said an allowance event was more likely. He joked, "She needs a little more experience coming out of the gate."

Geez, that goes beyond being "left" at the gate - more like stuck in the trunk with the luggage in the parking lot!

But was truly impressed that seeing everyone leave her like that didn't seem to rattle her - she just got over it and went to work - nice filly!

Showed this video to my husband last night - told him to keep any eye on #5. Gate opens and he says "what #5?"

Seriously though - really like this filly and her style - not too many maidens run that relaxed (and straight!) plus she seems to have some extra gears installed and is not afraid to use them.
