We were over at A clinic with our QH/Arab who measures pony. He is moving along quite t well and I mention we had hopes to get to Rolex one day, to a bystander watching, when she mentioned that they dont let ponies go above prelim without special permission from USEF and FEI. I know of an age requirement, but height?

I tried to find something, but cant ? Anyone know?

Ok- this will be very vauge, but I think I remember reading somewhere that one used to have to get permission to compete a pony at the FEI levels, but that is no longer the case.

Could not tell you where or when I read it, probably in an article about a pony competing in the upper levels... Shrug!

USEF has no height restrictions. So no problems with Intermediate and Advanced.

I'm not an expert on the FEI rules, but Theodore O'Connor competed at Rolex. I am prettty sure he had a USEF "pony card". So i do not think there is an FEI problem on height.

Thx guys. I dont think FEI has anything, in Europe its much more common to compete ponies at the bigger fences. Will cross that bridge if it comes with huge smile! Not an issue I am not looking forward to!! Thx for help!

Nope. I took my 14.2 pony Intermediate. Considering there is no "official" measuring in eventing like there is for a pony card in the USHJA, I don't even know how they would reinforce it. I assume lots of people just approximate heights for events or even FEI passports.

I would assume that the only time the FEI cares if it is a pony or not is for the FEI pony competitions (which the US have none of). I would assume then the ponies would have to be measured, just like ponies here have to be measured for the h/j world.

You can always fudge it and say he's 15h...no one measures.

14.2 and 1/16" means it's a horse. Just measure it when its feet need doing before you pull the shoes off. Horse. Problem solved.

I think the FEI DOES care for Dressage. Not sure at what level. But I have heard that, if Seldom Seen were half an inch shorter, Lendon Grey could not have taken him to the top in FEI Dressage.

Annex H provides information for International Pony Championships which are restricted to Ponies and are at the 1 and 2 star levels only.

At one time Badminton would not allow ponies to enter, don't know if that restriction is still valid or not. There was a minimum height of either 15 or 15.2 hands - working from long ago memory here.
